The Walnut Sideboard Edit: 7 Pieces Worth Saving For

A walnut sideboard is the easiest way to bring the modern classic look into a room. It adds warmth, hides the clutter and gives you a stage for a lamp, a stack of books and something sculptural. These are seven walnut sideboards worth saving for, from mid-century reissues to contemporary craft.

What to look for in a walnut sideboard

Veneer or solid? Most walnut sideboards use walnut veneer over a stable core. Good veneer is not a compromise: it lets designers use beautiful grain on large surfaces without warping. Finish: oiled walnut looks deeper and can be refreshed; lacquered walnut is easier to keep clean. Legs: slim steel or tapered wooden legs keep a large piece from feeling heavy.

    The edit

    1. Woud Array sideboard, walnut

Designed by Says Who for Woud. A clean, graphic sideboard in walnut veneer with a grid of open and closed compartments. The low 150 cm version can stand on the floor or be mounted on the wall, which keeps it light in a smaller living room.

    2. Carl Hansen & Søn BM0253 sideboard, walnut

A 1953 design by Børge Mogensen: a low, 150 cm sideboard in oiled walnut veneer on a slim black steel frame. Simple, honest and very Danish, it works as easily under a TV as in a dining room.

    3. House of Finn Juhl The Sideboard

Finn Juhl designed it in 1955 and it was relaunched in 2012. Available in walnut with sliding doors that can match the wood or come in colour, and with an optional tray unit on top. A true modern classic with a playful edge.

    4. Sibast No 11 sideboard, oiled walnut

A reissue of an Arne Vodder design in walnut veneer with stainless steel details and coloured interior panels. At 152 cm wide it is a statement piece for a dining or living room. Stock has varied, so check availability before you fall in love.

    5. Carl Hansen & Søn CH825 Credenza

Hans J. Wegner designed the CH825 in 1959 and it was reissued in 2014. Long and low at 200 cm, it comes in oak or walnut with stainless steel details: the kind of piece that anchors a whole wall.

    6. Another Country Sideboard Two, walnut

A contemporary craft piece with a solid walnut top, walnut-veneered casing and a choice of brass or walnut legs, finished with plant-based oil and wax. Made to order in the UK and Portugal, so plan for a lead time.

    7. Kave Home Norlen tall sideboard, walnut veneer

A taller, high-street option with four doors in walnut veneer and brushed stainless steel handles, in FSC Mix certified wood. Useful when you need storage height rather than a long, low line.

    Prefer vintage?

Mid-century Danish sideboards in walnut, teak and rosewood come up regularly at auctions and on secondhand sites. Search for the designer names above, such as Arne Vodder or Børge Mogensen, plus “sideboard”. Check that drawers run smoothly, that doors close properly and that the veneer is not lifting before you buy.

    How to style it

Keep the top asymmetric: a table lamp at one end, a stack of books in the middle and one sculptural object or a plant at the other end. Hang art or a round mirror slightly off-centre above it. For more ideas, see How to Get the Modern Classic Look at Home.
